News: Hopkins Advises Golota! |
|
|
By Scoop Malinowski
Pound-for-pound boxing number one Bernard Hopkins recently had a warrior-to-warrior conversation with heavyweight hopeful Andrew Golota. The undisputed Middleweight king had but one bit of simple advice for Golota, who challenges John Ruiz for the WBA Heavyweight title on November 13th on pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden. Hopkins said to Golota, "Just stay focused."
Golota was very pleased with the encounter with The Executioner, as Hopkins is a fighter he respects very much.

News: Golota NOT ranked by WBC |

Wordl Boxing Council did NOT rank Andrew Golota in their latest top 40. They did rank for example Riddick Bowe who had an even longer layoff and only one fight since then.
Two other Poles were ranked high - light heavy Tomasz Adamek was ranked #4 and cruiserweight Krzysztof Włodarczyk was ranked #3

I feel like I'm 18 - interview with Andrew Golota |
|
|
Do you retire or not? Your manager Ziggy Rozalski says only your wife ishes so. Mariola says you promised her to retire after Ruiz fight.
I promised her nothing. She just wants me to sit at home and not keep getting hit. That's normal, every wife wants her husband to stay at home, take care of kids, take out garbage instead of wandering around.
How long are you gonna train?
Till I keep feeling young. Right now I feel like I'm 18. It's only a pity my muscles don't want to listen to the head anymore so much.
How do you handle pressure from preparations to John Ruiz fight?
Very well so far. I have two sparring partners, will have another one soon. Sam will also increase the number of rounds. Just the thought of it makes me feel pain :)
Sam Collona said you were number 1 heavyweight in the world. What do you say?
I have nothing to comment on. Sam knows boxing.
Whom from the top heavyweights you think you can't beat?
They tell me to fight the guy, I do it the best I can.
Didn't work out with Tyson, neither with Leiws. Would you fight rematches?
Why not? Although I'm not sure if it still makes sense. Even if I beat him you guys would say "the Beast"

News: Golota will fight Ruiz... twice! |
|
|
It turned out Golota and Ruiz signed the contract for... two fights! The rematch will apparently take place regardless the result of their first fight. This turned out to be just a rumor.
That's even better - Golota will make twice more money - said his manager Ziggy Rozalski.

Andrew Golota believes he can beat John Ruiz and so doeas Don King - Andrew will win cause I wanna go to Poland and hand his championship belt to Lech Walesa!
When asked about his preparations Golota answered: Very well but I do realize that Ruiz is a tough opponent. This will be a difficult fight as the opponent is extremely uncomfortable.
- Does your wife accept your ring return?
- As every wife she would prefer I stay home instead of flying around the world, training and boxing. She's against it.
- And kids?
- Kids are for it, their friends at school keep asking when will their father win, will he be a champion. They feel proud, they believe I will win.
After the conference Andrew and Tomasz Adamek - another Polish boxer to box on that card - stayed in New York to see the amazing fight between Felix Trinidada and Ricardo Mayorga. A w niedzielę wieczorem Andrzej Gołota już był w Chicago i trenował w Windy Gim z Samem Colonną.
John Ruiz: I'm delighted I;m gonna fight Andrew Golota for the championship belt. He's a very good boxer and deserved a shot.
I'm in good shape and will be even better by the fight time. I hope we will make an interesting fight and people want regret buying tickets.
Sam Colonna: I reapeat: Andrew will beat Ruiz. He's ready mentally and is missing about 15% to his top shape physically. He's stronger than ever.

In today's conference before Trinidad-Mayorga fight Andrew Golota spoke first. As usually, he spoke respectfully about his opponent and promised an entertaining fight.
His preparations are going great, Golota trains hard. Often he comes to the Windy City Gym with his rottweiller dog. Lat month he even found time to do some parachute jumping, his new hobby. He has no injuries and is in perfect mental shape.

News: There will be no trial against Golota |
|
|
Prosecution office in Sopot, Poland has dropped charges against Golota on the grounds that alleged victim's wounds were minor ones. It means that Golota can only be sued privately, not by the state's prosecutor.
The case in discussion is related to alleged beating of Jaroslaw T. by Andrew Golota in Sopot in March 2003. It is not known if private charges will be brought up.

Interview with Sam Colonna |
|
|
Boxinginsider.com: How's training going with Andrew Golota (for the November 13th Madison Square Garden fight against John Ruiz for the WBA Heavyweight title)?
Sam Colonna: "It's going good. He's real focused. He's doing everything that he's asked to do. And we're gonna start sparring on Monday."
Boxinginsider.com: That's funny, we've heard rumors that Andrew's been sparring with Oquendo and even put him down a few times...
Sam Colonna: "Nooo, that's just a rumor. We haven't even started sparring yet. We're supposed to spar with Oquendo. Oquendo's gonna have camp - I don't know where he's going but is brother don't want him in Chicago."

Apparently it is not enough to score a draw - and a controversial one - with the champion to be ranked by International Boxing Federation. In the last IBF ratings Andrew Golota was not ranked despite drawing with Chris Byrd in April this year. The Powerful Pole is ranked #5 and #8 by WBA and WBO respectively.

Interview with Andrew Golota by Doghouseboxing.com |
|
|
Benny Henderson Jr.: Hey Andrew, a pleasure to talk with you, thanks for taking out the time for the fans and Doghouse boxing.
Andrew Golota: Not a problem.
BH: How has your training been going?
AG: I started like a month a go it has been pretty good you know.
BH: What weaknesses do you see in John Ruiz that you feel that you could capitalize on?
AG: Its always a challenge you know. John Ruiz is a good fighter, durable and very good. It will be a tough fight but I have to go through it to be a champion.
BH: How will you handle the clinch-punch-hold style that John Ruiz seems to favor in the ring?
AG: Stay away from him and box.
BH: How has it been working with Don King?
AG: Don is a business man and very good. We have a good relationship, business only you know.

News: Andrew's working hard |
|
|
- Andrew has been working hard for five weeks now. He's gonna start sparring next week. So far we're focusing on conditioning -describes Sam Colonna, Golota's trainer.
He wakes up at 5am and jogs for 45 minutes. We do medicine ball training, skipping rope and heavy bag. We work on speed and leg strength. I promise he will in top shape for Ruiz.
- He's always in the gym on time, yesteray sooner than I was.
At least once a week his son joins him who just turned seven last Wednesday. My kids have come to the gym also and we did a little party for Andrew Junior. He LOVES his father! Andrew said many times he doesn't want his son to become a boxer but you never know!
Andrew is as usually careful about his diet. He never ate junk food but he eats a lot of white meat, vegetables and fruit. He drinks one liter of still water during every training.
He does not use a psychologist. Don King made it up before the fight with Chris Byrd. That was a typical PR trick. Golota doesn't need a psychologist, he got me. I can assure you Golota is not afraid of Ruiz.

Golota on Ruiz: I've got to be very cautious |
|
|
Is everything agreed as far your fight with Ruiz is concerned?
As far as I know boxing business probably not everything. Both Ruiz and myself have signed with "grandpa" (King) which is most importnant.
What can go wrong?
Injury, Ruiz may want more money, WBA may not approve or tv won't pay enough money and King starts changing terms

News: Golota-Ruiz is official |
|
|
John Ruiz and Don King have agreed on the purse and Golota-Ruiz fight is now official. Here's what Sam Colonna had to say about.
I'm not happy about it. Ruiz is much more difficult than Byrd but it's a relief to know that Golota will fight again. So far he just showed up twice and didn't feel like training hard. He even said "you know what, maybe Ruiz fight won't work out like rematch with Byrd". Now he just has to get down to training. There are two ways to beat Ruiz. One is to hit hard and fast. Unfortunately, Andrew's shoulder is still a little beat weak and he has never been a KO artist. There's a second way: move very fast around the ring, much like in the Byrd fight, that's what he has to do.

Golota: I can fight Tyson |
|
|
- You flew to Florida to sign a fight with Ruiz. Are you disappointed this fight is still not 100% done?
This is normal. If not now, I’ll fight him next time.
- Why does everyone want more money hearing your name?
F...k I don’t know. Ask them.
- Maybe you scared them away with the Byrd fight?
So it’s my fault? Maybe it is.
- Was Byrd fight a breakthrough in your career? Do you believe you can be a champion?
Absolutely. That’s why if I can’t get Ruiz I’ll fight for #1 contender with Whitaker.
- Your trainer and manager say it would be great to fight Tyson again...
They say so? Maybe, I don’t care – I can fight him again.
- How would your revenge with Tyson look like?
How would I know?
- Would you be confident enough to beat him this time?
Give me a break, do your job and I’ll do mine.

Andrew Golota answers readers' questions - part 2 |
|
|
Heavyweight contender and former Olympic bronze medalist Andrew Golota took the time to answer some more questions by BoxingInsider.com readers. Hope you enjoy: br>
- How do you rate Mike Tyson and where does he stand in all-time list?
Andrew Golota: Tyson all-time? I don't know. I like Muhammad Ali. I would rate Holyfield more than Tyson - he beat him twice easily. (But that was after prison, Tyson may have been better before he went to jail...) The way he was talking after jail, he was the same. He gave no chance to Holyfield whatsoever. (Tyson) said it would be a short fight. It turned out to be the other way.
- Regarding your boxing skills, what do you feel is your biggest strength and what is your biggest weakness?
Andrew Golota: I think I'm getting better now. I don't know why [laughs]. My boxing is more mature now.

News: Golota to fight on November 13. Ruiz signed but Byrd in picture also |
|
|
On Tuesday night in Florida John Ruiz signed a contract to fight Andrew Golota on November 13. However, the terms do not cover all of the financial terms which have yet to be confirmed in a separate deal. Meanwhile, Chris Byrd expressed interest in having a rematch with Golota. Also, Don King presented Lance Whitaker as a backup option. So Ruiz is a most likely opponent but we still need to wait to find out for sure.

Andrew Golota: "I don't know, like 340...360. No more. Maybe 350."

Golota, Ruiz and King negotiate as we speak |
|
|
Yesterday at 1pm Andrew Golota and Ziggy Rozalski flew from Chicago to Florida to meet with Don King and Ruiz camp. The negotiations go on as we speak and the contract may be signed as early as today or this weekend. Should this happen, the fight is most likely to take place on October 2 on undercard of Trinidad-Mayorga.
Both Ruiz and Golota would like to have Fight of the Night for understandable reasons and that is also part of the negotiations.

Interview with Bowe's lawyer |
|
|
Riddick can face anyone. There's nobody he should be afraid of says Steven Silverman, Bowe's lawyer.
- During the trial he blamed brain damage in the ring for what he did.
That is past, he's fine now.
- Bowe signed with Don King. Golota is in the same stable...
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
- Apparently Byrd doesn't want to fight you anymore? His lawwyers say King is not offering enough money. What do you say?
I think he's just afraid. But I can't make him sign the contract if he doesn't want to.
- What next then?
I don't know. The worst thing is that none of the other champs wants to fight me. Neither Klitchko (WBC) nor Ruiz (WBA).
- There is also WBO champion Lamon Brewster?
What kind of title is that, what kind of champion? It means nothing in serious boxing world.

News: Rematch with Byrd highly unlikely |
|
|
"Unfortunately, there will be no rematch with Byrd. I thought I'd play Byrd as a roulette in Las Vegas and convince him to fight Andrew. But he just danced and sang and wouldn't find Andrew. I'm Don King, I can do a lot but I can't force Byrd. He prefers to fight Jameel McCline instead, it's an easier opponent."
Don King did not mention lack of agreement on the purse. Byrd requests 2 milion dollars.

Golota-Byrd still not certain |
|
|
Chris Byrd hasn't signed the contract for his rematch with Golota yet. His manager claims it's not because he's anxious but because he wants to be paid the way he deserves.
The good thing is that Andrew started light training as his hand is healing quickly. Let's hope his left jab will soon be as good as it used to.
Should Golota-Byrd II not happen, Andrew will likely fight Ruiz for WBA title.

News: Byrd to sign the contract !!! |
|
|
Most likely Chris Byrd will sign the contract for Golota-Byrd II this Thursday, May 13. As soon as the contract's signed Andrew gets back to the gym for rigorous training. The fight on July 10 is an almost done deal.
Golota's hand heals very well and he should be in top shape by the fight time. This time Golota wants to knock Chris Byrd out.

News: IBF approves Golota-Byrd II |
|
|
The IBF has voted to grant its heavyweight champion Chris Byrd an exception to the mandatory defense rule. IBF rules require its champion to box the leading available contender every nine months but for the time being, Byrd will be allowed to bypass that requirement. Today's ruling, made by way of a letter from IBF president Marian Muhammad to promoter Don King's attorney, Dana Jamison, paves the way for King to stage a rematch between Byrd and Andrew Golota, which King reportedly will stage on July 10. Initially, the request did not come from Byrd himself, but rather from King, but over the weekend, Byrd joined his promoter's request by informing the IBF that he wished to fight Golota again. However, the Byrd-Golota II winner will be required to box the IBF's leading available contender, currently Jameel McCline, within 90 days of the rematch.

News: Golota's injury a minor one! |
|
|
A surgery last week that was supposed to address a major left biceps injury leaving Golota for 7-8 weeks outside the gym turned out to be a minor one. The muscle was not torn but merely stretched. Golota spent a mere hour in the hospital and will be in the ring soon.
Luckily, the rematch with Chris Byrd on June 10 seems not to be in danger.
